SCIOS Certification

The risk of power outages is nowadays too great for livestock farming in the Netherlands. The insurance association reports that more than half of the barn fires in recent years have been caused by short circuits and other electrical malfunctions. The purchase of an emergency generator is therefore very wise. A SCIOS inspection is legally mandatory, but what exactly does this entail?

SCIOS stands for: Foundation for Certification of Maintenance and Inspection of Combustion Installations.

The SCIOS foundation focuses solely on Dutch legislation and works with a quality system for technical installations.

The associated inspections were introduced in 2016 and have primarily an environmentally conscious background. You could say this is disadvantageous for livestock farming, but livestock farmers can also see their advantage in it. A well-functioning emergency generator has lower emissions, costs less energy, ensures safety and limits business risks. The SCIOS foundation works with different 'scopes'. These scopes relate to the different installations that must be inspected. The two most important scopes for an emergency generator are Scope 4 and 7, where 7 only applies to installations with an external tank.

All inspectors who perform SCIOS inspections must pass a number of exams that are recognized by SCIOS. In addition, they are also checked every 18 months by an independent Certification Institute. Companies are even checked annually and can certify themselves for one or more scopes. Thus, not only the inspectors but also their employer guarantee craftsmanship and quality.

For emergency generators between 20kW and 100kW, an inspection will be needed every 4 years, while an emergency generator larger than 100kW must be inspected every 2 years. However, every inspection always starts with a First Special Inspection (EBI). Here the foundation is laid for proper inspection and maintenance. This satisfies not only the government but also the insurers.

If an inspection or maintenance session reveals that an installation shows defects, the installation owner is obligated to repair them. It is therefore very practical to do business with a service company that can provide both inspections and maintenance.

Abato Motoren B.V. has had certified personnel in service since the introduction of SCIOS inspection to take all your worries off your hands. Because our technicians are familiar with every brand of emergency generator, they can always work competently and quickly. They will also indicate the recommended repairs during an inspection so you can ensure that your emergency generator can continue to work optimally.

In short; a reliable emergency generator starts with the service from Abato Motoren BV.
